The present invention relates to a method of controlling a water injector and an internal combustion engine operated by this method, the method and the internal combustion engine serving to prevent deterioration of a catalyst for exhaust gas purification due to the temperature increase. The method for controlling a water injector according to an embodiment of the invention is that which can control the operation of the water injector, which injects the water into the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine, on which a turbo system, which serves to compress the air and thus the amount of air The method comprises the following method steps as the main point of the embodiment according to the invention: assessing a catalyst state in which the state of the catalyst for the exhaust gas purification is detected and then decided on the basis of the detected state, whether the catalyst in a dangerous situation advised or not; calculating a water injection amount in which, if the catalyst is in a dangerous situation, then calculating a flow value F1 for the water injection with which the temperature of the exhaust gas can be reduced to a predetermined temperature value; and injecting the water at which a water injection operation of the water injector is made on the basis of the flow rate F1 for the water injection calculated by calculating a water injection amount.
