A drive system, control system, and method use model predictive control systems to generate a plurality of sets of possible setpoints and to determine costs for each set of possible setpoints. The set of possible setpoints having the lowest cost is determined and defined as a selected set of setpoints. In certain circumstances, the setpoint set by the MPC may be replaced by another gear ratio command based on override inputs. Minimum and maximum gear ratios are determined based on the overdrive inputs, thereby determining a restricted (or arbitrary) gear ratio. The restricted or arbitrary gear ratio is used to determine whether an MPC determined gear ratio or gear ratio based on the arbitrary gear ratio is to be used to determine an ultimate gear ratio. Pressures are directed to a transmission pulley assembly that is configured to implement the ultimate predetermined gear ratio.
