A power distribution module (28) has an input line for receiving power from a DC power source (22). A switch selectively opens the input line and blocks supply of energy from the input line to an output line to be connected to a continuous load (102). A solid state power control controls a gate drive for the switch. The semiconductor power control can be used to distinguish between a precharge mode, in which a current flows significantly to supply a capacitor in the downstream continuous load, and a short-circuit mode, in which a short circuit exists.
