A supervisory device (DS) equips a master unit (OM) of a multiplexed communication network (RC) with transmission of data frames between the master member (OM) and at least one slave member (OE1-OE3). This device (DS) comprises analysis means (MA) placing in a first state a parameter p (2) associated with a slave member (OE2) when the latter (OE2) is declared physically present on the network (RC), and incrementing by one unit a current value of a counter c (2) associated with a slave member (OE2) whenever the master member (OM) does not receive a read frame from this slave member (OE2) while the associated parameter p (2) is in its first state, and considering that there is a confirmed fault of a slave member (OE2) when the associated counter c (2) reaches a maximum value in a first time interval predefined.
