One or more voice alarm devices (13,fig.1) are arranged to connect to an addressable two-wire loop of a fire alarm system 1 via a loop connection interface 14. Upon detection of a fire, a control panel (3,fig.1) instructs appropriate voice alarm devices (13,fig.1) to retrieve relevant audio from local storage 16 and output the audio via a local speaker 17. The use of such voice alarm devices avoids the need for a separate public address and voice alarm (PAVA) system which does not have individually addressable speakers. The audio files may comprise a verbal warning, a test message, or music.
