A steerable horizontal drilling device includes a ground penetrating radar device to identify and avoid objects while drilling. The drill head 1 includes a radio transmitter 6, an antenna 7 and receiver 8 for receiving the reflected radio signal. The reflected radio signal received by the receiver is transmitted in an unprocessed state to a device 4 above ground. Transmission from the borehole to the surface can be wired 9 through the drill string or wirelessly (fig 4, 10).
