Rotatable Shaft With Oil Management Feature

A shaft 21 for use as a rotating shaft in a gas turbine engine is arranged, in use, to rotate in a circumferential direction R about its longitudinal axis X, where the inner surface 28 of the shaft includes a radially inwardly protruding flange 22, a circumferential array of radially extending apertures 26 provided in the flange, and an array of channels 24 which extend from an upstream side to a downstream side of the flange, eg in parallel with the axis, and which are arranged circumferentially between adjacent apertures of the circumferential array of apertures. The flange may be integrally formed with adjacent portions of the shaft. The channels may have straight and parallel sides 22a, 22b or may taper toward a narrower centre. The channels and flange may together define a round or square raised platform 29 around each aperture. In use, fluid, eg oil, drawn axially along the inner surface is diverted through the channels, avoiding the apertures and reducing the escape of fluid.
