Method and system for indexing of video data for faceted classification

Indexing of video data in a database by facet characteristics wherein combinations of at least two characteristics are generated relating to the video data 203, each combination having a facet counter representative of the number of facet characteristics in the combination 205-206. The numerical value of the facet counter is increased 207, a search for video data is performed on the database and only those combinations where the facet counters are positive are used. When data is removed from the database, each facet counter relating to the removed video data is decreased by at least one (404, figure 4). An aggregate counter may be generated when video data is written to the database representing the sum of two or more facet counters. Facet characteristics may include absolute or relative time periods relating to video data writing time, video data sources, characteristics of users or groups with access to the video data, motion detection, video/audio analysis data, vehicle identifiers, user comments and tags or external system events.
