A mould layer assembly comprises a carrier 202 defining a mould contact face on a first side, and a temperature control face on a second opposite side. The temperature control face is separated into a plurality of temperature control zones each comprising a fluid chamber. An insert 204 defining a mould profile for forming a moulded article is assembled in a cavity (236, Figure 4) of the carrier such that it overlaps a temperature control zone. The cavity may break through into the overlapped temperature control zone or may be a blind cavity. In another embodiment a plurality of support elements (630, 632, 634, Figure 11) are stacked on the temperature control surface side of a mould face component 602 of the mould layer to provide a support surface for the mould layer assembly. The mould layer may be used to define a layered mould for producing fields of medical implants, optics or consumer electronics.
