A surge arrester of an airfield lighting system, wherein the airfield lighting system comprises a primary circuit having multiple of transformers with primary windings and secondary windings, the primary windings of the transformers being connected in series in the primary circuit and at least one of the secondary windings of the transformers is adapted to feed electric power to a secondary circuit having an illumination device of the airfield lighting system, wherein the surge arrester comprises hermetically sealed enclosure for protecting the circuitry of the surge arrester and connectors for electrically connecting the surge arrester to the secondary circuit, the surge arrester being adapted to provide a low impedance current path to ground for excessive voltages.
