The invention relates to the use of type III polyketide synthases from bacteria, such as actinomycete bacteria, as phloroglucinol synthases. The invention also relates to isolated nucleic acid molecules which encode the aforementioned type III polyketide synthases, as well as the vectors and host cells that comprise such nucleic acid molecules. The present invention also relates to methods for producing phloroglucinol.
