PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital dispensing system for analyzing a sample and a method for staining a slide. The system includes a fluid droplet ejection system housed in a compact housing unit. A fluid droplet ejection system includes a fluid droplet ejection head and a fluid cartridge containing one or more fluids to be dispensed, and a cartridge translation mechanism for advancing and retracting the fluid droplet ejection head and the fluid cartridge on a sample holder in the x direction. And a sample holder translation mechanism for moving the sample holder forward and backward under the fluid droplet ejection head and the fluid cartridge in the y direction orthogonal to the x direction. A digital display 27 is attached to the fluid droplet ejection system to display fluid volume information to the user.
