To provide a magnesium oxide having a high specific surface area and mainly including smaller pores, which result in high reaction activity, and capable of being suitably used for applications of a chemical thermal storage medium, a battery material, a coated insulator film, a solar cell, a rubber acid acceptor, ceramics, an adsorbent, an abrasive, a catalyst and the like.SOLUTION: In a magnesium oxide, a peak of log-differential pore volume value exists in a range where a pore size is 5 nm or less, and the log-differential pore volume in a range where the pore size is 6-8 nm is 0.3 cm/g or less.SELECTED DRAWING: None
