To provide a method for estimating a tread damage of railway vehicle wheels capable of appropriately simulating a tread damage while reducing an arithmetic load.SOLUTION: A method for estimating a tread damage of railway vehicle wheels includes generating finite element models of a rail 41 and a wheel 10 including a tread surface 13 that rolls while contacting with the rail, extracting an element of a surface portion corresponding to a contact area with a brake shoe 31 on the tread surface from the finite element model of the wheel, calculating heat distribution in the wheel when a given amount of heat is applied to the extracted elements, and performing structural analysis of contact places when the finite element model of the wheel is brought into rolling contact with the finite element model of the rail taking into consideration changes in material properties of each element of the finite element model of the wheel according to the heat distribution.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
