The present invention provides a method for characterizing microvesicles using a cocktail of labeled antibodies. The present invention also provides a kit that can be used for this purpose. Leukocyte-derived microvesicles have been identified as important biomarkers for various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and sepsis. Accurate and timely detection of LMVs is therefore important for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The present invention provides means to solve these problems.
