To provide a novel method of diagnosing NAFLD and NASH, which can be more easily implemented and does not burden patients and medical professionals, and to provide a novel method of determining progression of liver fibrosis in subjects potentially having NAFLD and NASH without burdening patients and medical professionals.SOLUTION: A method provided herein comprises measuring a total carnitine level, a sum of a free carnitine level and a total acylcarnitine level, in a biological sample, and determining the total acylcarnitine level by subtracting the free carnitine level from the total carnitine level. A measurement result is compared with a reference value to enable early diagnosis of NAFLD and NASH and determination of progression of liver fibrosis.SELECTED DRAWING: None
