Systems and methods describe augmented reality provided for surgical navigation. An augmented reality overlay is displayed over the tracked anatomy image. An optical sensor unit provides a visible image of the anatomical structure along with a tracking image of the target associated with the object including the anatomical structure in real three-dimensional space. From the posture of the anatomical structure in the real three-dimensional space, the posture of the anatomical structure in the calculated three-dimensional space is generated and registration is performed. The overlay pose of the computational three-dimensional space is aligned with the pose of the anatomical structure so that the overlay is drawn on the anatomical structure in the desired pose. Overlays can be generated from overlay models of general or patient-specific bones or other anatomical structures or objects. Such overlays allow registration of anatomical structures.
