The medical device includes a medical imaging, diagnostic or therapeutic component 10 and an access point 30 that acts as a hub for a wireless communication protocol compliant WLAN having a defined set of wireless local area network (WLAN) channels. The access point includes a radio 32, an electronic processor 34 and a non-transitory storage medium 36. The non-transitory storage medium stores a list 40 of one or more critical medical WLANs and instructions executable by an electronic processor. The scan instructions 42 operate the radio to measure traffic on the WLAN channels generated by the critical medical WLANs listed in Listing 40. The channel selection instruction 44 selects a channel based at least on the measured traffic on the WLAN channel generated by the critical medical WLAN of list 40. The WLAN operation instructions 46 operate the access point as a hub for a medical device WLAN that carries traffic on the selected WLAN channel.
