Mosaic vaccine for serotype A foot-and-mouth disease virus

Synthetic foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) mosaic polypeptides and nucleic acid molecules encoding the mosaic polypeptides are disclosed. The mosaic polypeptide has a larger T cell epitope coverage than the native FMDV polypeptide, including normal FMDV epitopes but not rare FMDV epitopes. When the mosaic polypeptide is included as part of the FMDV genome, the mosaic polypeptide allows viral replication and assembly into FMDV particles. The mosaic polypeptide and nucleic acid compositions can be used to elicit an immune response that provides protection against a wide range of serotype A FMDV strains. [Selection] Figure 1
