The device includes a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) including a substrate and a superconductor trace disposed on a top surface of the substrate, the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) having at least one Josephson junction interrupting the path of the superconductor trace. The conductor trace is a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) comprising a first superconductor material exhibiting superconducting properties below a corresponding superconducting critical temperature, and a dielectric capping layer on top of the SQUID. The dielectric capping layer covers most of the SQUID's superconductor trace, the capping layer includes an opening through which the first region of the SQUID is exposed, and the first region of the SQUID includes A dielectric capping layer comprising one Josephson junction.
