Earthquake scale determination method for early earthquake warning

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of determining an earthquake size (magnitude) for earthquake early warning without waiting for arrival of a peak amplitude (maximum amplitude), and improving a determination speed of the earthquake size for the earthquake early warning earlier than the conventional one.SOLUTION: The method quickly acquires an initial P wave released from a hypocenter and estimates a final earthquake size for earthquake early warning. The method includes: calculating a collapse time of self-similarity of rupture from a displacement amplitude absolute value of the observed P wave; calculating a time difference Tfrom the start of P wave to the collapse time of the self-similarity; and calculating the final earthquake size by a correlation expression of the earthquake size and Tobtained from that past observation data.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
