PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near-infrared absorbing alumina material and near-infrared absorbing alumina ceramics having superior weatherability and heat resistance by providing an insulating alumina material with a near-infrared absorbing property.SOLUTION: A material suitable for use as a near-infrared absorbing alumina material contains no less than 99.5 mass% AlOand 100 ppm to 3000 ppm, inclusive, of Fe in FeOequivalent and, when A1 is defined as a spectral absorption index at a wavelength of 600 nm and A2 is defined as a spectral absorption index at a wavelength of 1900 nm, A1 is 20% or less and A2 is 30% or more. Further, the material is suitably used as near-infrared absorbing alumina ceramics by treating the material to be ceramics with porosity of 0.5% or less.
