The present invention addresses the problem of providing a liquid crystal composition which does not require an alignment treatment or an alignment film on the substrate, and solves this problem by providing a low molecular polar compound which homogeneously aligns a liquid crystal medium on a substrate, and for example, is characterized by being represented by general formula (1).
