To provide a focal distance variable lens device and a focal distance variable lens control method which can obtain sufficient image quality for a plurality of focal distances and shorten image detection time.SOLUTION: A focal distance variable lens device has an image detection condition setting section for setting image detection conditions, the image detection condition setting section capable of setting a combined mode S41 which repeats an image detection loop including at least one multi-plane image detection operation S44 and at least one single plane image detection operation S45 as image detection conditions. In a multi-plane image detection operation S44, a plurality of focal distances for performing image detection can be set (S42) during one cycle in which a focal distance of a focal distance variable lens varies.
