PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exerting excellent deposition chipping resistance and peeling resistance in intermittent cutting work of a hardly-cut material such as a duplex stainless steel.SOLUTION: In a surface-coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer including at least a Ti compound layer is formed on the surface of a tool substrate, a high-carbon low-nitrogen area and a low-carbon high-nitrogen area are formed when measuring the nitrogen and carbon concentrations in a Ti compound layer right above a tool substrate surface along a direction parallel to the tool substrate surface. Besides, when measuring the nitrogen concentration in the Ti compound layer in a direction perpendicular to the tool substrate surface from the low-nitrogen area, the area in which the nitrogen concentration gradually increases, preferably the area in which the average concentration gradient is 20 to 300 atomic%/μm exists over a range of 0.2 μm to the inside of the Ti compound layer. Further preferably, another Ti compound layer having a different film type, α-AlOlayer and κ-AlOlayer are formed on the surface of the Ti compound layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
