The present invention provides a polyrotaxane having high durability, particularly high hydrolysis resistance, and a method for producing the same. The present invention is a polyrotaxane in which a capping group is arranged so that the cyclic molecule is not eliminated at both ends of the pseudopolyrotaxane formed by the linear molecule including the opening of the cyclic molecule in a skewered shape. The cyclic molecule is represented by the following formula I (in the formula I, R1 represents a group such as —CH3 and —CH2—CH3, R2 represents a group such as H and —CH3, and n represents a polycyclic group added to the cyclic molecule. A polyrotaxane having a substituent represented by an apparent degree of polymerization of an alkylene oxide chain or a derivative thereof, the value of which is 1.1 to 10.0.
