ex vivo culture systems are provided. therefore, a culture system is provided which comprises a culture medium and a precisely cut tissue slice placed in a tissue culture insert, wherein the precisely cut tissue slice is maintained in a highly oxygenated atmosphere containing at least 50% oxygen, and in which said culture is rotationally agitated facilitating the intermittent submersion of the tissue slice in the culture medium. methods for culturing tissue and methods for using the culture system to select a drug for the treatment of a disease are also provided.
