apparatus and method for measuring movement characteristics of a strand of hair, the apparatus comprising: a movement platform on which the hair strand is mountable, the movement platform operable to apply a forced oscillation to the hair strand; a camera to capture images of the hair lock during the movement of the hair sample, during and after the application of the forced oscillation; and a computer communicatively connected to the camera, the computer including a processor to process the captured images and extract quantitative measurements of the hair lock from the captured images, where a filter is applied to the captured images to remove any stray hairs detected before analysis subsequent use of the images to be performed.
