Binocular augmented reality display devices and corresponding methods allow alignment calibration to be performed by the end user. According to one approach, a camera is positioned to have a field of view that simultaneously includes part of an image projected on the left eye display and part of an image projected on the right eye display. By projecting through each screen at least part of a calibration image and identifying right and left field alignment features from the image sampled by the camera, an alignment correction can be obtained. Alternative approaches employ correlations of images sampled by prospective cameras rigidly associated with the respective display units of the right eye and left eye, or require the user to enter a manual adjustment to align the camera images exchanged transversely with the content seen in the real world .
