The methods of this invention include steps: the provision of a raw material feed stream containing an epoxy and carbon monoxide,contact of the raw material feed stream with a metal carbonyl in a first reaction zone to convert at least one part of the provided epoxy into a beta lactone,direction of the effluent from the first reaction zone to a second reaction zone where beta lactone is subjected to conditions that convert it into a compound selected by the group consisting of: an alpha beta unsaturated acid,an alpha beta-unsaturated ester,an alpha beta unsaturated amide and an optional substituted polymer of polypropylene,as well as the isolation of a final product containing alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acid,the alpha-beta unsaturated ester,alpha-beta unsaturated amide or polypropylene.
