The present invention relates to the use of a polypeptide that inhibits activin-mediated pathway as a medicament for increasing hemoglobin level, hematocrit level or reticulocytes level and for stimulating erythropoiesis. Furthermore, the present invention relates to the use of a polypeptide inpreparing a medicament for increasing hemoglobin level, hematocrit level or reticulocytes level in a patient and for inducing erythropoiesis in a patient. In particular, said polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence selected from amino acid sequences SEQ ID NOs: 2, 3, 16, 17, 7, 12, 20 and 21.
