The invention relates to nuclear magnetic resonance detection and to a method for measuring the water content of samples. The apparatus comprises spacers for providing a main magnetic field; receiving a sample from the main magnetic field; means for measuring excitation of the RR magnetization in said sample receiving the amount of the main magnetic field determined by the frequency of operation; used to measure the RF signal produced by the excited sample, and to determine the relative water content of the sample based on the RF signal. According to the invention, the sample receiving space accommodates a sample having a density of at least 0.5 dm 3 and the means for providing the main magnetic field comprises a resistive electromagnet adapted to provide a main magnetic field corresponding to a frequency of 400-20 KHz.
