A spin-on filter (100, 100a) includes a housing (300, 300b) and a cover plate (200, 200a, 200b) defining a central opening (202, 202a). The housing (300, 300b) has a closed end (302) a circumferential wall extending from the closed end (302) to an open end (304) and circumscribes an internal chamber (306) configured to receive a filter element (16). The cover plate (200, 200a, 200b) includes a substantially planar outer surface (204) extending radially outward from the central opening (202, 202a) to an outer circumferential wall (210). The spin-on filter (100, 100a) also includes a series of engagement tabs (220, 220b) integrally formed with one of the outer circumferential wall (210) of the cover plate (200, 200a, 200b) or the interior wall (310) of the housing (300, 300b). Each engagement tab (220, 220b) is configured to mate with corresponding ones of a series of receiving slot (320, 230b) s (320, 230b) formed within the other one of the outer circumferential wall (210) of the cover plate (200, 200a, 200b) or the interior wall (310) of the housing (300, 300b) when the cover plate (200, 200a, 200b) and the housing (300, 300b) are axially pressed together to secure the cover plate (200, 200a, 200b) to the open end (304) of the housing (300, 300b).
