The object of the invention is how to obtain LiCoO2 cathode material for use in lithium ion batteries. The way LiCoO2 cathode material is obtained is by precipitating cobalt carbonate in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone from inorganic cobalt salt using an aqueous solution of potassium carbonate or sodium in the molar amount 1:1 -2:1 relative to cobalt salt. The precipitation is carried out at the 60-90-C temperature until pH 8-10 is reached at the rate of mixing 400-800 and/or min.
