The invention relates to a method of real-time ex-vivo assessment of breast tumour margins using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy SERS. According to the invention, the method consists in cutting the margin with a single scalpel, excising the tumour, analyzing traces on the scalpel in 3...6 randomly selected points, using a portable Raman spectrometer with excitation wavelength in the visible range, in a time interval of 40...120 s, analyzing the spectra with various analysis methods, such as PCA, followed by sectioning the tumour mass with another scalpel, accumulation of SERS spectra and analysis thereof as above, to finally diagnose the benign or malignant type of the tumour.
