A brass-plated steel wire to reinforce a rubber article, where: when measured with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, abbreviated XPS, an outer surface contains zinc in an amount of 4.93 to 14 atomic%, and contains oxygen in an amount of 50 atomic% or less; and on the outermost surface, an atomic ratio of copper to zinc is greater than 2.33 and 6 or less.
