A pharmaceutical composition comprising Stauntonia hexaphylla raw leaf extract or non-polar solvent soluble leaf extract as an active ingredient, for use in promoting the formation of bone or cartilage tissue in a subject in need thereof, where the promotion of bone formation is achieved by increasing direct osteoblast differentiation and osteoblast activity.
