A method of processing a bitumen-derived stream within secondary extraction includes processing the bitumen-derived stream with a primary separation stage to produce a primary overflow stream and an intermediary stream as an underflow stream. The intermediary stream is processed with a first cyclone separation stage to produce a first cyclone overflow stream enriched with hydrocarbons relative to the intermediary stream. The first cyclone overflow stream is processed with a gravity separation stage to produce a further overflow stream enriched with hydrocarbons relative to the first cyclone overflow stream and an underflow stream depleted in hydrocarbons relative to the first cyclone overflow stream. The operating conditions of the primary separation stage can be modulated independently of operating conditions of the gravity separation stage.
