The invention relates to a packing element, in particular for use in masstransfer and/orheat transfer columns or towers, through which a gas and/or liquid flows,wherein thepacking element (1) comprises a plurality of exchange surfaces (4a-4f) whichareessentially formed by the surfaces of half-wave-shaped and/or wave-shapedstrips (3a-3f),wherein the packing element comprises at least one first group of strips (2a),comprising at least one half-wave-shaped and/or wave-shaped strip with a firstperiodiclength li, and at least one adjoining second group of strips (2b), comprisingat least onehalf-wave-shaped and/or wave-shaped strip (3c,3d) with a second periodiclength 12,wherein the wave-shaped and/or half-wave-shaped strips (3a-3f) extend along animaginary axial plane of the packing element, wherein the periodic length 11of a strip(3b) of the first group of strips (2a) adjoining the second group of strips(2b), and theperiodic length 12 of a strip (3c) adjoining said strip of the first group ofstrips, arematched to each other in such a way, that the two adjoining strips (3b, 3c)are in contactwith each other at at least one point, enabling a liquid transfer betweenthese two strips(3b, 3c), wherein at least one strip (3a, 3f) extends from a first end bridge(6a) to asecond end bridge (6b), and wherein the two end bridges (6a, 6b) run along thetransverse direction of the packing element.According to the invention it is provided, that at least one strip (3a-3d) ofthe packingelement (1) is torsioned about a longitudinal torsion line of the packingelement (1).
