ADVANCED STEREO CODING BASED ON A COMBINATION OF ADAPTIVELY SELECTABLE LEFT/RIGHT OR MID/SIDE STEREO CODING AND OF PARAMETRIC STEREO CODING

Systems and methods for encoding and decoding stereo signals are described. Anexampleencoder system encodes a stereo signal to a bitstream signal. The encodersystem has adownmix stage generating a downmix signal and a residual signal based on thestereosignal and a mono spectral band replication (SBR) encoding stage thatgenerates an SBRencoded downmix signal and mono SBR parameters in response to the downmixsignal. Aparameter determining stage coupled to the downmix stage determines one ormoreparametric stereo parameters. A perceptual encoder coupled downstream to thedownmixstage selects: encoding based on a sum of the SBR encoded downmix signal andtheresidual signal and based on a difference of the SBR encoded downmix signaland theresidual signal; or encoding based on the downmix signal and based on theresidual signal.
