A method and device for detecting a shape defect on a side surface of a steel coil. The method comprises: respectively performing three-dimensional scanning of a first side surface (412) and a second side surface (422) of a steel coil (420) to build a first three-dimensional model corresponding to the first side surface (421) and a second three-dimensional model corresponding to the second side surface (422); and determining whether the steel coil (420) has a shape defect on the basis of the first three-dimensional model, the second three-dimensional model, and a target width of a steel strip from which the steel coil (420) is produced.
