The present application concerns a method and a device for detecting material accumulation (55) in a material application machine. The present application comprises a method for detecting material accumulation (55) on a 3D-printing hot end (10) which comprises steps of sensing a temperature at a hot end (10). The method also comprises the step of sensing a heat output at the hot end (10). The step of calculating a ratio of the sensed temperature and the sensed heat output is also included. A step of comparing the calculated ratio with a limit value, and also a step of carrying out an action on the basis of the result of the comparison are similarly included. The device for detecting material accumulation in a material application machine comprises a hot end (10) with at least one heating device (20), a temperature sensor (30), a temperature control and a device for evaluating data of the heating device and the temperature sensor (30).
