The present invention relates to a method for securely operating a terminal having updatable security software, which method makes it possible to provide hardware structures which allow trusted processing of data and are also updatable. Consequently, the corresponding security software can be adapted to current threat situations. The present invention further relates to a correspondingly configured secure element for use in the method, and to a system arrangement configured to carry out the proposed method. Furthermore, a computer program product is proposed having control commands which carry out the method or operate the proposed system arrangement.
