Present invention relates to method of reducing swelling of expansive soils of expansive soils by granular pile technique. Besides initial moisture content. Wi, the spacing between the piles (expressed by s/d ratio; s = spacing between the piles and d = diameter of a pile) and the relative density of granular pile forming material were the variables of the study. Three initial moisture content 15%, 17% and 20%, three s/d ratio values 2, 3, and 4 and two relative densities of the sand (Dr) 50% and 70% were selected. Granular piles of different diameters were installed in prepared clay beds in model cylindrical moulds. Reduction in swelling of expansive soils due to installation of pile, depends on Wi, s/d ratio and the relative density (Dr) of the granular pile material.
