The embodiments of the present invention relate to the technical field of automobiles and software, in particular to a method and apparatus for updating firmware in a VCI device, and an automobile fault diagnosis instrument. The method for updating firmware in a VCI device comprises: establishing a connection with a VCI device, wherein the VCI device comprises firmware, an operating system and a startup manager, the firmware is used for realizing a communication protocol and/or a communication standard supported by the VCI device, and the operating system is used for managing the product model of the VCI device and version information of the current firmware; acquiring the product model of the VCI device and the version information of the current firmware; and determining target update firmware according to the product model, and the version information of the current firmware, such that the VCI device updates the current firmware to the target update firmware. By means of the method, according to the embodiments of the present invention, firmware in a VCI device can be updated in real time, such that the VCI device satisfies the diagnosis requirements of an automobile fault diagnosis instrument, thereby improving the safety of the automobile fault diagnosis instrument.
