A device for directly or indirectly detecting one or more substances in at least one sample comprises: at least one closed chamber which has at least one sealable access point; at least one automatic measuring device, arranged in the chamber, for automatically directly or indirectly detecting one or more substances in the at least one sample; at least one inactivating device, arranged in the chamber, for inactivating biological substances; at least one automatic handling device which is arranged in the chamber and is designed to pick up the sample and to move the sample or a sample material to the measuring device; and at least one controller which is connected to the sealable access point, the measuring device, the inactivating device and the handling device. The controller is able: to actuate the automatic handling device in order to pick up the sample; to hermetically lock the sealable access point in order to prevent access to the chamber from outside after the sample has been inserted into the chamber and until the sample has been inactivated; to actuate the automatic handling device in order to move the sample or the sample material to the measuring device; to actuate the measuring device in order to carry out an analysis of the sample or the sample material; to actuate the inactivating device in order to inactivate biological substances; and to unlock the sealable access point after the inactivation in order to enable access to the chamber from outside for removal of the sample from the chamber.
