The present invention relates to Vol vox-derived beads, a method for the production thereof, and their uses as a scaffold for animal cell culture, in a method of culturing animal cells and in a method of engineering tissue and tissue-like structures. The present invention also relates to compositions and pharmaceutical compositions comprising engineered tissue and tissue-like structures of the invention and to the cosmetic and therapeutic uses thereof.
