This device for estimating the solidifying shell thickness in a casting mold is provided with: an input device which accepts input of measurement results of the temperature and components of molten steel in a tundish of a continuous casting facility, measurement results of the width, the thickness, and the casting speed of a cast slab cast using the continuous casting facility, and a molten steel flow velocity distribution in the casting mold; a model database for storing a model formula and parameters relating to a solidification reaction of the molten steel in the casting mold of the continuous casting facility; a converting unit for converting the molten steel flow velocity in the casting mold, input into the input device, into a heat conduction parameter; and a heat transfer model calculating unit for estimating the solidifying shell thickness in the casting mold by calculating the temperature distribution in the casting mold and in the steel in the casting mold, by solving a three-dimensional unsteady state heat conduction equation using the measurement results of the temperature and the components of the molten steel in the tundish of the continuous casting facility, the measurement results of the width, the thickness, and the casting speed of the cast slab cast using the continuous casting facility, the model formula, the parameters, and the heat conduction parameter calculated by the converting unit.
