The present invention predicts occurrence of slopping during decarburization refining of molten iron in a converter furnace without requiring a slopping detecting sensor to be installed within the converter furnace or in the immediate vicinity thereof and without causing time delay. The present invention pertains to a method for predicting slopping during decarburization refining in a converter furnace for producing molten steel from molten iron through molten iron decarburization refining by spraying an oxidizing gas from a top-blowing lance onto the molten iron in the converter furnace or further spraying an oxidizing gas or inert gas from a bottom-blowing tuyere, the method involving: measuring an emission spectrum of throat combustion flame blown out from a throat of the converter furnace; calculating an emission intensity for a wavelength range of 580-620 nm in the measured emission spectrum; and predicting an occurrence of slopping on the basis of time series variations in the calculated emission intensity.
