CODED DATA CHUNKS FOR NETWORK QUALITATIVE SERVICES

A method and apparatus for controlling data flows in a network. The method and apparatus receive one or more data packets having a header and a payload, the header defining a plurality of coded chunks of data in the payload. The coded chunks are coded in a random linear coding with the one or more packets originating from a sender outputting application data packets with application data chunks. The method and apparatus determine whether all of the original number of coded chunks are received. For any data packet with less than the original number of coded chunks, the method and apparatus accesses stored coded chunks to determine whether the original number of coded chunks can be decoded using the stored coded chunks. The method and apparatus decode the less than original number of coded chunks and the stored number of chunks to retrieve those coded chunks which are missing.
